  14. latest software product that allows low-cost personal printers to be shared by
  15. all the Macs on a network.  ShadowWriter installs in minutes to transform an
  16. inexpensive solo printer (e.g. the Personal LaserWriter LS) into a shared
  17. printer that any Mac on an AppleTalk-compatible network can use.  ShadowWriter
  18. is Gizmo's second product offering in a planned series of low-cost network
  19. "gizmos" for Macintosh computers.

  22. explains Jim Hakanson, President of Gizmo Technologies.  "It's good for small
  23. Mac work groups looking for a low-cost network printer...and it fills the bill
  24. for larger firms with an existing EtherTalk network, where adding low-cost
  25. printers would alleviate congested printing resources." ShadowWriter also
  26. creates an ideal upgrade path for offices that already have a personal printer,
  27. but now want to share it with all of the office Macs.

  29. ShadowWriter: A 90's Networking Tool for Affordable Laser Printing
  30. ShadowWriter had to be a 90's product because it wouldn't have worked in the
  31. 80's. In those days, laser printing from a Macintosh was only possible by using
  32. an expensive laser printer (that equaled or exceeded the price of the Mac) on
  33. the network. To solve this price dilemma, lower-cost personal laser printers
  34. were produced. These new lasers proved to be handy, except they were made for
  35. solo printing so they couldn't be networked. Now there was affordable printing,
  36. but no networking!  Enter 1991: Gizmo creates ShadowWriter to transform
  37. low-cost personal printers into networked printers that all of the Macs in the
  38. office can use...

  40. Up and Printing In Minutes
  41. ShadowWriter is a "networking for the rest of us" style of product—meaning you
  42. don't have to be a network guru to use it. Just start with a network of Macs,
  43. connect a low-cost printer to one of the Macs, install ShadowWriter software on
  44. the Macs on the network, and that's it!  From then on it's as easy as going to
  45. the Chooser to access the ShadowWriter printer in the same way you would select
  46. any other network printer.

  49. ShadowWriter includes some features not found on even the most expensive
  50. network printers. A quick overview of ShadowWriter's key attributes include the
